Brothers Jeremy and Keston Muijs, co-founders of creative agency Hatch in Melbourne, Australia, were consulting for a host of beauty brands in 2008. It was then that the seeds of Grown Alchemist first flourished, as the brothers recognized the gap in the market for products that pushed the envelope of nature- and efficacy-focused formulations.While natural beauty brands at the time emphasized ingredient quality standards, sometimes formulations weren’t as cosmetically elegant as possible as a result, or the packaging and branding felt more rustic than cosmopolitan chic. Furthermore, skin was often only addressed at surface level, not incorporating the complex internal mechanisms that can affect skin such as hormones and lifestyle factors. Beauty supplements did exist, but these were sold by brands strictly in the supplements rather than beauty sectors. Instead, the Muijs brothers decided to approach skincare, supplements, and personal care from a 360-degree angle, with an emphasis on restoring skin function, in a decade when such approaches didn’t register on most retailer or consumer maps. Their brand name pays homage to the fact that the ingredients in their products are grown rather than manufactured, and to the alchemy that occurs when these potent ingredients find the optimal formulations and delivery systems for the human body.With the modus operandi “Beauty is cellular health,” Grown Alchemist’s product development process incorporates fields such as genetics, nutridermatology, psychotherapy, gastroenterology, nutrition, and nutricosmetic chemistry, using certified organic ingredients.
